The Latest Mayhem Mounts Update Brings Forth a Stunningly Wild New Spear to Your World
The seasonal game drop for the block-building phenomenon has arrived — and it features the first new weapon introduced into the game since the mace made its debut. The javelin is finally here and it has the potential to revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, particularly when you thrive on pandemonium.
An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides
The Mayhem Mounts update also incorporates a host of fresh elements and enhancements focused on riding animals in the game. That driving concept made the spear the ideal addition for this release, as the creators had long felt it was time for a fresh combat tool.
"We knew initially that we wanted a new weapon that would provide extended reach, and we designed it specifically for fighting from atop a creature," explained a senior product manager. "We tried out a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both played wonderfully when we ran our trials and also made sense for the intended purpose."
If you're wondering whether mounted combat means you can charge at your companions on horseback, the response is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an attack ideally crafted for it.
"[Jousting on horses is a major applications for the spear, and it's a blast," the lead says. "The spear has a dual attack system: You have the jab attack, where you pierce your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you couch your lance and deal increased harm [with] the more momentum you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for knightly combat."
Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures
The chaotic fun can extend beyond there, though. If you're far enough into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] excellent for equipping the elytra and flying forth and making some real mayhem," she suggests.
In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now real, and it deserves to be an Olympic sport without delay.
Another key feature in this latest drop is the Nautilus. This aquatic being, which is based on the nautilus shells players have gathered for years, can be tamed and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it move you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also maintain your breath meter, so there's no requirement to surface for fresh air.
The rest of the additions are largely things that seek your demise, as is the way of Minecraft. As expected, there's also a undead nautilus spawning in the water, often with a zombie villager on its back. If you succeed in take care of the Drowned, though, you can befriend the undead mount — or the standard version, for that matter — with a blowfish.
"We've pondered this issue for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the right time to also bring in something for aquatic environments," the lead elaborates. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a few different ideas for aquatic rides that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus concept art looked compelling, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."
She also points out that there are actually two different types of undead nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you encounter underwater."
Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks
Further inclusions include the sun-proof skeletons, desert-exclusive undead archers that can endure the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you find yourself in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on zombified camels, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an notable look that sees their ribs poking out. The same goes for undead steeds, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.
The remaining updates on the drop's list are refinements, including some highly requested changes to riding horses. Now, you can traverse waterways while riding a horse. Furthermore, high-tier barding is now available at the workbench, so you can provide your steed with the best defense it deserves.
A Spicy Send-Off for the Year
In summary, the last content update of the year is a solid offering. The spear alone — and the mayhem it enables — would have constituted a significant enhancement. Throw in the Nautilus, and new threats trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.
The Mounts of Mayhem update is available for all major editions of Minecraft.
